I wonder what Sam's illustrious forebear would make of him staying at Westley House?
It was good to see Sam Herring who came to the evangelist's conference in Daventry and visited us afterwards in Witney.
Sam is a direct descendant of Sir Thomas Herring (1693 - 1757) who was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1747 to 1757 and a staunch critic of John Wesley (1703 - 1791).
He said that "Mr Wesley is a dark and saturn creature" and opposed him and his extraordinary evangelistic ministry at every turn.
He sadly proved he was on the wrong side of history since I can guarantee that most people reading this post will not have heard of Herring although almost certainly will have heard of Wesley.
This goes to show that God always gets the last laugh and those who are true to his word are ultimately the ones on the right side of history.
The ones who opt for temporary fame and the applause of people by taking the path of least resistance and embracing the Zeitgeist of the moment are but a blip in the history of the world.
